The scheme of SRMS which is being implemented since 2007 needs further modifications. The nomenclature of the Scheme has been changed as “National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem” (NAMASTE) from the earlier name of “Self-Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers” (SRMS). NAMASTE scheme is to be implemented in all 4800+ Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the country, during the next three years i.e. upto 2025-26 with an outlay of Rs. 349.70 crore. It is a joint initiative of Department of Social Justice & Empowerment and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The scheme has following objectives:

  • Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (MS) and Persons Engaged in Hazardous Cleaning of Sewer and Septic Tank (SSWs).
  • Promotion of safe and mechanised cleaning of sewers and septic tanks through trained and certified sanitation workers.

2.         As per the new modified scheme, profiling of SSWs engaged by ULB directly or through PSSOs would be undertaken in camp mode at ULB level. These SSWs  are proposed to be provided Health Insurance under AB-PMJAY, Occupational Safety Training, PPE Kits and Capital Subsidy for procurement of sanitation related project to make them “SANIPRENUER”.
